The educationalist, academic and former community reorganizer Bill
Ayers has played down suggestions that he has past links to the radical
Senator Barack Obama. Speaking at a meeting of the Illinois “Community
Radicals for Activist Politics” (CRAP) group, the Presidency of which
he is currently seeking, Professor Ayers claimed that Senator Obama was
just “some kid I used to see in the street sometimes”.
Professor Ayers has come under scrutiny amid claims that his
relationship with Obama was more involved than he has been prepared to
admit. One right wing blogger has gone so far as to claim that Ayers
sowed the seeds of radicalism in the Senator, when Obama was still in
kindergarten school. Ninton Snipe, whose influential blog is read by
many across the political spectrum, claims that it was in fact Ayers
who is responsible for the fanatical world view that the Senator holds
today. “Ayers used to babysit Obama when Obama was a kid”, he writes.
“Far from being just some kid he knew in the street, Ayers began his
babysitting career in Obama’s living room. They used to play Monoploy
together which Ayers would describe as a “typical symbol of capitalist
oppression”. In a very real sense it is Ayers who is responsible for
the fanatic we see today.”
Ayers was unavailable for comment but a spokesman described the latest
claims as amounting to no more than “guilt by association”. “Professor
Ayers has deplored Senator Obama’s record. He could not have been
clearer on that point.” She said.
